Hi There
Is there anyone that can put me in contact with activities specifically aimed / groups set up for children with DCD. I have an 8 year old son who has DCD, but trying to find activities and groups that he would enjoy has been extremely challenging. My son is keen to join tennis / basketball, but I would love for him to be involved with other children suffering from DCD. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The scouts has a wait list as long as your arm. I live in Glanmire.

Louise, regarding play therapy.I have a 17 year old son who attended as a 10-11 year old.He had a diagnososis of ADHD only at the time and some oppositional defiant sympthoms. He has only recently enough been diagnosed with DCD and a few other delights on the autism spectrum including possible Aspergers syndrome. He never seems to tick all the boxes for this despite a few different assessments over the years because of persistent problems mostly to do with school and social interaction.
Anyway to deal with the original question we didn't find play therapy particularly good. That said, perhaps it was just us because none of a myriad of different therapies worked. It just seemed quite a "wooly" one,of all the different therapies, alternative and other, that we tried. And it is quite expensive. You are meaant to carry it on at home after a certain few sessions and some regular update sessions. We attended in Glanmire.
I havent been on this forum in quite a while so just to say I'm saddened to see the amount of families still struggling with the exclusion and isolation that seems to be the dominant worry once you get past the diagnosis hurdle. But heartend to see the support network people are obviously availing of.
Anyone who wishes I am willing to talk with re the above or any number of issues from Ritalin to DCA allowance(which we got, even if only for a brief period!!)
And by the way I feel things improve a little as they go into senior cycle. So hang in there,Mary

Hello all, I am looking for some advice about my son with DCD. He is 9 and has been diagnosed with DCD since he was 4yrs old. A lot of work has been done on the areas of speech and ot and he has improved remarkably in both. He still struggles with making friends, particularly in a group situation. I have seen many posts about this topic, however, not many responses. I am wondering has anyone heard of or been through Play therapy? It has been suggested by a friend of mine and I am, on one hand, excited about the prospect of something helping, however, we really can't afford this to be counter productive.
If anyone has any other suggestions I would be very grateful to hear them. My son is a bright and very interesting young boy but the social exclusion is tearing him apart.
Thanks
Louise
